Press Release
Save Our Monarchs Foundation Officially Designated a 501(c)3 Non-Profit
Minneapolis, MN – Oct. 9, 2014 – Save Our Monarchs Foundation, the only foundation solely dedicated to saving the monarch butterfly by distributing the milkweed seeds for its survival, has qualified and is officially designated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Save Our Monarchs is now eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions under section 170 of the IRS tax code and may also receive bequests, transfers or gifts under section 2055, 2106 or 2522 of the federal tax code.
So far this year, Save Our Monarchs has distributed about 80,000 milkweed seed packets to visitors of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, the Butterfly House at the Minnesota State Fair and the Oklahoma State Fair, customers of Bachman’s and many other Twin Cities area retailers and garden centers, and through its website, www.SaveOurMonarchs.org.
Save Our Monarchs currently has an information table at the screening of “Flight of the Butterflies” at the Science Museum of Minnesota, where visitors can pick up vouchers for free milkweed seed packets. “Flight of the Butterflies” tells the true story of one scientist’s 40-year-long quest to find the monarch's secret winter hideaway. The Science Museum is also hosting a Butterfly House with dozens of species.
Each seed packet costs about a dollar for the seeds, printing the packets, mailing costs and fulfilling the orders, said Ward Johnson, executive director of Save Our Monarchs. “We’ve given away tens of thousands of seed packets with no strings attached,” Johnson said. “Donations are desperately needed so we can continue our efforts to save the monarch butterfly – one milkweed at a time,” he said.
Although primarily focused on planting milkweed in Minnesota during its first year of operation, Johnson said that Save Our Monarchs plans to expand its outreach to other cities along the Monarch’s migratory flyway next spring.
Save Our Monarchs Foundation is the only foundation solely dedicated to saving the monarch butterfly by planting more milkweed. Save Our Monarchs is partnering with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and garden clubs to distribute milkweed seeds, the sole source of sustenance of the monarch caterpillar. To obtain milkweed seeds or make a donation, visit www.saveourmonarchs.org.
