WHY MILKWEED ON HALLOWEEN?

Monarch butterflies are endangered, and the main reason is simple: milkweed is disappearing. Monarchs lay their eggs only on milkweed, and their caterpillars eat nothing else. No milkweed, no monarchs.

Halloween is the one night a year when dozens of families come to your door. Hand each of them a packet with their candy, and your neighborhood becomes monarch habitat by spring. Fall is also the ideal time to plant. In nature, milkweed seeds drop in autumn, rest in the cold soil all winter, and sprout in spring.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Order by Oct 19th. We're shipping now, so your packets arrive before Halloween.

2. Hand them out October 31st. Drop one in every candy bag or hand them to parents. If you have extras, plant your own garden or share with the community!
3. Watch your neighborhood bloom. Families plant the seeds this fall, the seeds overwinter naturally, and monarchs find the milkweed in spring.

WHERE YOUR DONATION GOES

Save Our Monarchs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your full $250 is tax-deductible. Every donation funds more milkweed: seed packets for classrooms, pollinator corridors along highways, and habitat restoration projects across the country. You're not just buying seeds. You're funding the comeback of an endangered species.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Seed Plant-By Dates

Please note that the “Plant By” date printed on our seed packets does not mean the seeds are expired. It is a recommended planting date provided by the seed manufacturer.

Our milkweed seeds are fresh and remain viable for 1–2 years beyond the printed “Plant By” date when stored properly. You can still plant these seeds with confidence and expect good germination.

For best results, store seeds in a cool, dry place until you are ready to plant.

Order by October 19th.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will my packets arrive? We're shipping now. Order by October 19th for guaranteed delivery before October 31st.

Is this really tax-deductible? Yes. Save Our Monarchs is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your full donation is tax-deductible under IRS guidelines. You'll receive a receipt with your order.

Isn't it too late in the year to plant? No, fall is the best time. Milkweed seeds naturally drop in autumn and need a cold winter to germinate. Seeds planted around Halloween sprout on their own in spring.

Will the seeds actually grow? Yes, if they're planted the way the packet says. Milkweed needs a cold period before it sprouts, so the prep step matters:
  • Fall planting: Plant outdoors and winter takes care of the cold period for you.
  • Spring planting: Put the seeds in a damp paper towel in the refrigerator for 30 days first. This raises germination above 80%.
Then plant them about 1/2" deep in a sunny spot and keep the soil watered for at least two weeks. Milkweed is slow to sprout, so give it time. Seeds scattered with no prep germinate at around 1%, which is why every packet includes step-by-step instructions.

What does the "Plant By" date on the packet mean? It's a recommended planting date from the seed supplier, not an expiration date. Stored cool and dry, our milkweed seeds stay viable for 1-2 years past the printed date.

Will kids actually like getting seeds? Paired with candy, yes. The packets have a fun Halloween design and kids love growing something. Parents love it even more.

Are milkweed seeds safe to hand out to children? The sealed packets are safe to hand out. Like any seeds, they're for planting, not eating, and the packets say so.

How much area does one packet cover? Each packet holds 30-35 seeds and covers roughly a 4' x 8' plot at one plant per square foot.

What kind of milkweed is it, and where is it grown? Native milkweed grown on GMO-free farms in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, with 96%+ seed purity.

What if I don't get enough trick-or-treaters? Leftover packets make great gifts, stocking stuffers, or classroom handouts. Or plant them yourself. Store them cool and dry and they'll keep.

Order by October 19th.
